My Top 20 Favourite Cartoons

By Stigma31

I grew up watching cartoons. Every Saturday morning I would race to the TV to watch the Saturday Morning Cartoons. This was always my favourite time of the week. I never realized how old some of the cartoons that I watched were until I decided to write this article. I have put together a list of my top twenty favourite cartoons with a couple of honourable mentions. And to all you comic book fans, yes I did leave out a lot of superheroes because really they are all pretty much the same, the character have different powers but the stories are always the same. It is pretty much the same as harlequin romances. Same story change the setting and character and you are done.

And I really do not like the overly stupid and crass cartoons that have come out. They don’t challenge the mind. They are not ingenious. Put 3 teenage boys in a room and they could come up with something just as good.

Top 20 + 3

1. The Bugs Bunny Show (1960) – This by far the most original, diverse cartoon show ever. I don’t think anyone has ever come close to it. It does sadden me that the cartoons have now edited several scenes out them. I never considered them violent. The worse being the Coyote and the Roadrunner, and really isn’t it showing children to stand up to bullies? The roadrunner is the natural prey to the coyote. All the classical music in it was amazing; Rossini is still my favourite composer.

2. The Simpsons (1989) – Really just a new Flintstones but with all the spoofing of everything I grew up with made it my second favourite show.

3. Transformers (1984) - More than meets the eye. The fact that they actually made toys that could transform gave the show more viability. The first time I saw the show it seemed a little absurd but when I saw the toys it was these are amazing.

4. Jonny Quest (1964) - Sort of a Ritchie Rich that actually does cool stuff. How much trouble can two boys and dog get into?

5. Battle of the Planets (1978) the battle scenes and fluidity of the show made it one of the best of it’s time. I don’t know how many time I said G-force as a kid.

6. The Flintstones (1960) - I watched both The Honeymooners and The Flintstones as a Kid and they were both great, even if Norton was much funnier than Barney, the Caveman theme was excellent. I would love to try a Bronto-Burger.

7. SpaceGhostCoast to Coast (1994), (1966) - I couldn’t believe Space Ghost returned. I loved the show when I was a kid. Then they turned it into an interview show with real people. I am pretty sure Stephen Colbert uses some of the styling from Space Ghost’s interview process.

8. Tom and Jerry (1965) - Itchy and Scratchy will never top the good old Tom and Jerry.

9. The Tick (1994) - Superhero spoof extraordinaire. Funny and timeless.

10. Pinky and the Brain (1995) – What are we going to do today Brain? Two mice trying to take over the world. Excellent!

11. Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids (1972) – Hey! Hey! Hey! What can I say?

12. Animaniacs (1993) – Tiny toons obviously a more childish version of the Bugs Bunny show, but Animaniacs was very original.

13. Gargoyles (1994) – Very Gothic defenders of the night. Very original storyline as well.

14. Voltron: Defender of the Universe (1984) - Of all the Voltrons that came out this one was my favourite. I did enjoy them all.

15. Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends (1981) – Always was and always will be my favourite comic book superhero. The original mutant.

16. Scooby Doo, Where Are You! (1969) – If it wasn’t for those darn kids. They must have been close friends from grade school, because they would have socially separated in highschool. That’s right Raggy!

17. Dungeons & Dragons (1983) – The roleplaying game hit makes the cartoon list. I was told the game was Satanistic when I was kid. Good thing I wasn’t that gullible.

18. Thundarr the Barbarian (1980) – By the power of Greyskull, this was one of the first new 80 cartoons. With nothing much coming out since the sixties this was a fresh new cartoon.

19. Thundercats (1985) - Thundercats Ho! Great character interaction, and Snarf!, made the show.

20. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) – Second cartoons to come from a roleplaying game. Yes the game came out first, then the comic then the TV show.

The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show (1961) – Hey Rocky, watch pull a rabbit outa my hat!. Great combination of clips, different characters, and ideas. My favourites were Mr. Peabody and Sherman. Hmmm, kind of like Brian and Stewie from Family Guy.

Popeye the Sailor (1960) – Although every show was the same, this was always a fun cartoon to watch.

Woody Woodpecker (1957) – Love the laugh, wha-ha ha, wha ha ha, ha ha ha ha ha.

what a memory rush this hub was for me. I remember doing the very same thing, getting up early mornings just so that I could catch my favorite cartoons and tv shows. I would go from 6am till about 2pm, then go take a nap, then play with my friends and with my action figures.

You have inspired me to write my own top 10 or so favorite tv shows. Thanks for the memories, and for reminding me how old I am ROFLOL.
